Dhol

Double-headed barrel drum played with sticks. The defining sound of South Asian wedding processions. Loud, celebratory, and built for outdoor entrances and crowd-leading moments.

Darbuka

Goblet-shaped hand drum at the heart of Middle Eastern rhythm. Fast, articulate, and deeply expressive. The primary instrument for Persian and Arabic reception sets.

Riq

A tambourine with paired metal jingles and a thin skin head. Adds shimmer and texture to Middle Eastern grooves. Often played alongside the darbuka for layered rhythmic depth.

A box percussion instrument played seated, producing bass, mid, and snare tones. Used for cocktail hour sets and fusion performances where a warmer, quieter rhythmic presence is needed.

Set planning

We discuss which moments you want live percussion and which instruments fit each. Our percussionist reviews your DJ’s setlist to understand the musical direction ahead of the event.

DJ rehearsal and sync

The percussionist and DJ align on tempos, drop points, and transition cues before the event. Live percussion only works when the two performers are communicating.

Soundcheck

Most percussion instruments are entirely acoustic and need no amplification. Where a mic is used for larger rooms or outdoor settings, our sound engineer handles the feed into the main PA during the pre-event soundcheck.

Live performance

The percussionist reads the room and responds to the crowd in the moment. He watches the dance floor, listens for cues from the DJ, and modulates his energy accordingly.

Zaffa and Grand Entrance

The dhol or darbuka leads the procession from the doors to the stage. This is percussion at its loudest and most ceremonial. The rhythm announces your arrival and commands the entire room to turn around.

How long does the percussionist perform?

It depends on how you book. A zaffa or grand entrance is typically 5 to 10 minutes. A cocktail hour set runs 30 to 45 minutes. A dance floor set alongside the DJ is usually 30 to 60 minutes. The Full Event package covers up to 4 hours of total performance across all moments. Tell us your timeline and we’ll structure it accordingly.

Can he perform with both Persian and South Asian music in the same event?

Yes, and this is one of his strengths. A multicultural wedding where the DJ moves between Persian, Indian, and Western music needs a percussionist who can follow across all three.

Is the percussionist available as a standalone booking or only with the DJ?

Both. Our wedding percussionist can be booked standalone if you have an existing DJ. We coordinate directly with your vendor to align on tempo and cues. When booked with the Royaal DJ, the rehearsal and sync process is built into our standard preparation.

Can he lead the zaffa procession?

Yes. The zaffa is one of the most requested uses of the dhol. The percussionist leads the procession from the entrance, setting pace and energy for the couple and wedding party as they enter the room. We coordinate the timing with your MC and coordinator in advance so the moment lands exactly as planned.

What genres can he perform across?

He performs across Persian, Arabic, South Asian, and Western fusion music. Whether the DJ is playing a mix of Farsi hits, Bollywood, or a contemporary open-format set, the percussionist adapts his instrument choice and playing style to match the energy of the music in the room.
